Things you need to know

Autumn Term Information

As the current Year 6 children are ready to take their next step we are very much looking forward to welcoming you all into Hawk and Robin in September. Maybe your year group will be the first to make Mr Saxby cry when you leave!

We wanted to let you know some of the fantastic things we will be learning over the Autumn term.

Big Question

Our first big question is:   ‘WW1: was it really necessary?’

We will be using our Historian and Geographer skills to help us to understand the events that led up to the start of the war; who was allied with whom; what life was like in the trenches and we usually get very interested about the animals! We wonder what you will all be interested in!

If you visit anywhere in the summer that links to our question please bring anything in with you that you would like to share with us.

English

In English we will be working on writing excellent sentences; ensuring that we have perfect presentation and really getting into some great texts. We will be studying ‘War Horse’ and ‘Archie’s War’.

We want you all to be greedy readers. Please read as much as possible in a variety of ways like newspapers, magazines, cook books and even menus at restaurants. There will be some excellent books you can borrow from our year 6 library in September. We know lots of you are looking forward to ready in the deckchairs.

Maths

Our focus at the beginning of the year will be ‘place value’ (knowing what each number means); the four operations and arithmetic. These are key parts of maths knowledge the years 6 children need to be secure in order to access the rest of the maths curriculum with ease.

Science

Our first topic will be electricity. Miss Pritlove has some fantastic ideas of how to link this into our big question like thinking about morse code!

If there is anything else you would like to know, please do not hesitate to message us via Dojo – we have set up a Team Year 6 Dojo this year, there will not be separate class ones.

Have the best summer: we can’t wait to teach you next year and to watch you grow!

Home Learning

Reading for Pleasure Book – Your child will bring a book home which they want to read for pleasure. It may not be the same level as their AR book. They might read this to themselves or ask you to read it to them/share it with them.
• AR book – This book your child will read to continue to develop their fluency and accuracy as it will be at the level to support their progress. Please record when they read this book in their reading record with any comments.
• Core Learning Task English – This will be a task linked to the English learning during the past week. The part of English this will focus on will be based on the needs of the children from the past week.
• Core Learning Task Maths – This will be a task linked to the Maths learning during the past week. The part of Maths this will focus on will be based on the needs of the children from the past week.
• Spellings – Each week your child will have 8 spelling words to learn that will be ‘checked’. Their class teacher will communicate when the ‘check’ will be.
• TTRockstars Your child should aim to log on and rock at least 3 times a week (their log in will be in their reading record)
