SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The law entitles every child of compulsory school age to an efficient, full-time education suitable to their age, aptitude, and any special educational need they may have. It is the legal responsibility of every parent to make sure their child receives that education either by attendance at a school or by education otherwise than at a school.

Where parents decide to have their child registered at school even if not yet 5, they have an additional legal duty to ensure their child attends that school daily. This means their child must attend every day that the school is open, except in a small number of allowable circumstances such as being too ill to attend or being given permission for an absence in advance from the school.

Attendance is a very important aspect of school life! We aim to work very closely with parents to ensure that all children attend and punctually.

Any pupil’s absence or late arrival disrupts teaching routines and so may affect the learning of others in the same class. Please see below the table that explains the ratio between number of lessons missed and your child’s attendance percentage:

If a child’s attendance over a school year is …

…he/she will miss this many days… (Approx)

…and this many lessons…

Persistent Absentee

Parents have a legal duty to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend on a daily basis. Should you need to take your child out of school for an exceptional circumstance, please contact the school office.

You will be required to complete a Term Time Leave form which the office team will discuss with you.

• If your child has an unauthorised absent for 10 sessions (5 days) or more then both parents may receive a penalty notice for non-school attendance from the Cambridgeshire County Council as per the school’s attendance policy.

• If 2 term time leave Penalty Notices have been issued over a 3 year period then prosecution in relation to Section 444 Education Act 1996, may be considered as an alternative to a Penalty Notice fine being issued. Where a parent takes a child out of school during term time for an extended period (20 days or more), not authorised by the school, prosecution in relation to Section 444 Education Act 1996, may also be considered by the Local Authority.

Medical Appointments

We would rather you arranged medical appointments outside of school hours however, we appreciate this is not always easy.  Should your child have an appointment to attend please let the school office know and you will be asked to provide proof of appointment.

Pupil Sickness

Should your child not be well enough to come into school, please contact the school office before 9am to report the absence.  Leave a message on the answerphone to report an absence on 01480 375600

Please note, if your child has sickness and diarrhoea they must not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode.
