In a fiercely contested Henson Cup final, two second-half goals from Westfield Junior School denied the Paxton Panthers their first title.
The Panthers began the match with great intensity, highlighted by Mimi’s powerful long-range shot that rattled the crossbar. Further opportunities followed, with Paige and Penny both coming close to scoring. Westfield responded by creating their own chances, hitting the post, but were thwarted multiple times by Alice’s outstanding saves. The first half ended goalless.
In the second half, Westfield applied relentless pressure, pinning the Paxton Panthers in their own half. Strong defensive efforts from Isla, Molly and Hollie initially kept Westfield at bay. However, the deadlock was broken by a fine strike from a Westfield forward. Seeking to inject fresh energy, the Panthers brought on Ella-May, Polly, Milly, and Rosa. Despite a fantastic solo run that saw Rosa beat three Westfield players, the Panthers were unable to convert their chances.
Westfield soon capitalised again, scoring a second goal as the Panthers began to tire, still feeling the effects of Sports Day. Mimi tirelessly pursued every loose ball, attempting to rally the Panthers’ attack, but they were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.
The match concluded with a 2-0 victory for Westfield Junior School.
Well done to all of the girls that took part: Alice, Isla, Hollie, Milly, Molly, Ella-May, Mimi, Amy, Paige, Rosa, Penny, Polly and Leah.
